Domino Sound Record Shack - Record Store - New Orleans

Postby Tom Hopkins » Mon Jan 29, 2007 5:52 pm

Saturday, February 3, from noon to 8 pm is the grand opening of this store. 2557 Bayou Road at Broad, in Mid City. The flyer I got notes that they have new and used records and tapes, in the following genres: Reggae, Blues, Hip Hop, African, Soul, Rock, Jazz, Punk, International, Weird."

I think this store has a decent shot. There are a wide variety of genres and the prices are very reasonable. Plenty of parking and a good location. I didn't get anything, but saw things I might get if I wasn't on a tight budget. They do have a copy of probably the best vinyl release of 2006, Crow's "Bloody Tear" LP. It's in the metal section but is basically a must for fans of raw/driving hardcore punk.

The used LPs are super cheap ($3-6), the new stuff ranges a little more from $8-16. There's definitely some good stuff over there. A lot of dub and reggae, but still a big punk section--mainly with older stuff.

Does anyone know if they have any kind of website up? I linked this thread to NOLADIY in the "Miscellaneous" section, but if they have up a site, I want to change it to that.

Great selection, full of Vinyl...fair pricing... only vinyl and cassettes... run by great guys. Go support them now. Pretty sure there is no website...they did'nt seem to have a CPU, or desire to use one.

I tried stopping by today, but apparently they are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Seemed pretty legit inside though, I'm excited.

Also, Bryan if you see this, are all of the records you have at the Iron Rail? I went a week or so ago, but would like to thumb through more if you have them.

Yeah, everything we have is at the Iron Rail. I also just made a pretty big order to No Idea which should be in within a week.

My sole, minor complaint about the store is that they don't take credit cards. I fully understand not wanting to deal with it (fees, fraud, etc), but I don't carry cash.

As far as not having enough hardcore, the store clearly deals with most of the bigger distros so they could get what you wanted if you ask. As can Bryan.

this store is DIY.

I personally know the guys behind it. They worked thier asses off for this.

just because YOU are not doing it, that doesn't make something not DIY.

Support your community, buy a record from a thing called a record store... so that we don't have to sit around and tell children about the days when we had record stores.
