The Revivalists
Friday, September 10. Republic. 10PM. $5. Booking
The Revivalists have become a staple to the ever-evolving New Orleans music scene. Seamlessly crossing back and forth between the indie rock bands and vibrant funk and jazz genres, the Revivalists have taken the city by storm and now they are ready to take their music even further.
DatsiK | DJ Quickie Mart | Shanook
Thursday, September 23. Republic. 10PM. $10 ($8 in advance). Booking
Winter Circle Productions and the Low Country Bass Union is proud to present a new monthly series, BASSIK, that will feature the best local, national and international bass driven music on the planet. Pulling from the worlds of hip-hop, dubstep, electro, drum and bass and bounce, BASSIK delivers an eclectic mix of bass heavy beats and mind blowing visuals to keep the crowd moving throughout the night. The September edition of BASSIK features headliner, Datsik, a Canadian DJ self-ascribed as "Grimey industrial devious future ninja techbots wrapped in tinfoil and thrown down the stairs, only to be ran over by a steamroller and hung out to dry."
The Hold Steady | Wintersleep
Friday, September 24. Republic. 8PM. $18 ($15 in advance). Booking
"Our new record, Heaven is Whenever, is about struggle and reward. It's about accepting suffering as a necessary part of a joyous life. It's about how love can help us rise above these struggles. It's about faith. It's about how bad it hurts to settle for less. It's about not being scared to try. It's about four guys who still believe in the power and glory of rock and roll. Because even after a thousand sound-checks, a thousand load-in and load-outs, fifty missed birthdays, and a few hundred electrical shocks, our reward still vastly outweighs the struggle. In fact, the reward would not exist without the struggle. Thus, this struggle is inherently part of the reward. And in this way, the fantasy of playing rock and roll for a living is a lot like real life."
CocoRosie
Monday, September 27. Republic. 8:30PM. $18 ($15 in advance). Booking
CocoRosie is a lo-fi indie folk-tronic duo comprised of half-cherokee sisters Bianca "Coco" and Sierra "Rosie" Casady in Paris, France. Anybody unfamiliar with CocoRosie would instantly be able to tell that they are one of the quirkier packages in modern independent music, from their unconventional songwriting to their distinctive look. Often taking the stage in costume dresses and copious amounts of Cabaret-style rouge, they are known for their theatrically engaging live performances. More importantly, they write wistful songs of their European travels that include everything from xylophone and harp to screetching cat samples. They perform at Republic on September 27th in support of their new record, Grey Oceans.
Beats Antique | Yard Dogs Road Show | Lynx
Wednesday, October 6. Republic. 8PM. $18 ($16 in advance). Booking
Beats Antique's music incorporates Middle Eastern grooves, Balkan wedding music, flamenco, French Gypsy jazz, hip-hop, dub reggae, and other Eastern tonalities, all pulled together with electronica that won't put off club kids, but will appeal to world music lovers as well. The Yard Dogs Road Show is a hobo cabaret, a living patchwork of vaudeville and rock and roll. In the enchanting land of stage show entertainment theirs is both pleasant and formidable terrain. They require a sensitivity to the subtle and the absurd. They lead the modern hobohemian on a visual and sonic journey through part of history that may or may not have existed followed by an ambitious return to the emotional challenges of our punch-drunk contemporary world.
Gogol Bordello
Friday, October 8. Republic. 9PM. $28 ($25 in advance). Booking
Gogol Bordello combines elements of punk, Gypsy music, and Brecht-ian cabaret delivered through debauchery, humor, surreal costumes, and a frantic stage presence, to say the least. Adventures while touring worldwide, as well as the band members' own immigrant histories, fuel the subversively upbeat story-songs; Front-man and lyricist Eugene Hutz spins out scenarios that are, by turns, hilarious and heartbreaking -- from the outsider experience of gypsies in his native Ukraine to the story of New York's immigrant diaspora. Gogol Bordello is arguably the hardest rocking group of our discordant new century, maintaining a touring schedule and an onstage energy level that would send the average combo running for the emergency room. Catch them live at Republic on October 8th!
Mumford & Sons | Cadillac Sky | King Charles
Friday, November 5. Republic. 8PM. $20 ($17 in advance). Booking
Since they formed in December 2007, the members of Mumford & Sons have shared a common purpose: to make music that matters, without taking themselves too seriously. Four young men from West London in their early twenties, they have fire in their bellies, romance in their hearts, and rapture in their masterful, melancholy voices. They create a gutsy, old-time sound that marries the magic of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young with the might of Kings Of Leon, and their incredible energy draws us in quickly to their circle of songs, to the warmth of their stories, and to their magical community of misty-eyed men. Presented by Republic and Winter Circle Productions.
Bonobo | Tokimonsta
Wednesday, November 17. Republic. 9PM. $15. Booking
With the experimental warmth of '60s French films and the pizzicato flavor of horizontal hip-hop, Simon Green's Bonobo project established the welcome niche of a pretension-free, post-party intellectual chillout. An almost silent figure among Ibizian romanticists, Green began in Brighton, debuting in 1999 and recently releasing the buzzworthy Black Sands featuring the single "The Keeper." Presented by Republic and Winter Circle Productions.
Stars
Sunday, November 21. Republic. 9PM. $15. Booking
New York born and Montreal based, Stars are soft-revolutionaries and music is their rallying cry. Their indie dance pop rallies to save us from our mundane and complacent fears. When at a loss for words, one music writer said the only way to describe Stars was "beautiful hope". Their music has been described as "breath-takingly effervescent" and they have been called the kind of band that "blue lights and fog machines are made for". The new album, The Five Ghosts, which was released June 22nd, has already been lauded by SPIN for its "flowing, synth-backed melodies" and THE NEW YORK TIMES said that "The music brims with optimism, full of major chords, sparkling synthetic sounds and tireless electronic beats". FILTER congratulated its "perfectly placed synthesizers" and "haunting vocals," going on to say that The Five Ghosts "packs the same profundity, rhapsodic charm and orchestration of previous records, but Stars takes it one step further, intensifying their indie-pop wizardry."
